Mr. Robert Briscoe

Mr. Robert Briscoe (centre) accompanied by sons, Mr. Ben Briscoe, T.D., and Captain. Robert or ‘Bob’ Briscoe was well known for being a Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin and he also a TD. He was active in the Irish War of Independence. Briscoe was sent to Germany in 1919 to procure arms for the IRA.

    Discovering this photo brings back happy times with the 11th Field Medical Company and the various personnel who served in the Unit over the years.

    Eamon Martin, Chief of Staff of Fianna Eireann, was Briscoe’s best man at his wedding which took place during the War of Independence while they were both ‘on the run’.
